OUR PROGRAMS

Education & Skills Development Program

Empowering children and young women through inclusive, community-driven quality education.

Education & Skills Development Program

Somero Development Initiative supports children, adolescents and young women to access quality education, remain in learning, and build practical skills for life and work. Our approach combines early childhood development, foundational literacy and numeracy, scholarships, community-led learning, child protection, gender-responsive education, and vocational and digital skills.

We work with learners, parents, young fathers, schools, community facilitators and local leaders to reduce the barriers that push children and young women out of education. Alongside classroom and study support, our programs create safe learning spaces, strengthen family involvement, promote learning through play, and connect education with livelihood opportunities.

EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT

Learning Through Play: Everyday Play, Endless Possibilities

For children, play is learning. Somero uses structured play, storytelling, educational games and locally made toys to make foundational learning practical, joyful and accessible.

  • Eco-friendly toy making: banana fibre, wire, bottles, plastic caps and other local materials become learning tools and creative toys.
  • Safe play zones: cost-free community spaces where children can play, learn and build confidence under the care of trained community play champions.
  • Hands-on early learning: seeds, clay, blocks and other local materials make literacy, numeracy and problem-solving tangible.
  • Father-child play: fathers and caregivers learn that meaningful engagement depends on presence, creativity and connection rather than expensive commercial toys.

Reported initiative reach: 35,344 young fathers and 8,423 caregivers trained, 53,999 children accessing safe play, 76 local CSOs and community groups empowered, 10,000+ eco-toys crafted, and 25 community safe play zones established.
